Description

Discovering Joe van der Sar created a receptive conversation all around his childhood, the intentions of those he surrounds himself with, his professional soccer, or ‘fútbol’ career, and what all has his attention right now. All in the matter of the first hour of shooting, the comfortability filled the room. He was a natural in front of the camera, we are sure many would agree.

“I’ve been open to modeling but I think I could’ve been more proactive when it came to exploring modeling opportunities,” he pointed out after this first pursuit within the magazine world.

He is used to the flashes as he experienced it firsthand at such a young age when his father, Edwin van der Sar, saved the winning penalty in the European Championships against Sweden. We even discovered an archive where the father and son were celebrating seconds after;  the young boy’s hair was dyed orange, a fist pump was thrown in the air, and they both looked smitten.

Joe agrees that “it was surreal.”

“At a young age I always looked at my dad as any other kid would, I joined him on the weekends when he went to training and didn’t think of it as anything else than joining him to work! It has been an incredible blessing for me and my family once I began to understand more of the importance and popularity of what he did. It has allowed me to be at some historic games, be immersed in the game at the highest level from a young age and allowed me to see so much of the world already. While there are few things I would change, as I’ve grown older I have become more wary of how people act and their intentions. After various experiences where people around me aren’t always as sincere as they seem, it taught me from a younger age than most to be selective with those you surround yourself with.”

But more than soccer, his dad taught him about the finer things in life; including, the act of loving a woman the proper way. Even if that means he did not always give him direct verbal advice, he witnessed it in the house or in public, everywhere, his father displayed passionate admiration for his mother, Annemarie van der Sar.

Learning how to interact with other humans is one of the first skills we pick up as infants. Loving someone is not always perfect, but it is easy when there is “understanding and compromises”, as Joe summarizes about his parents’ secret to a long lasting relationship.
