Coming from the face of the September issue, Khayir Lewis, “Be comfortable with being yourself around everyone you meet in the industry,” he relays after growing through pivotal years within the industry. The booming model has found himself featured on Vogue Runway’s official site with his walk in the Death To Tennis Spring 2022 Menswear show. Apart from Death To Tennis, he also works with United By Blue, a sustainable clothing and home goods company. On top of those two admirable brands, he works closely with Damari, a black-owned clothing store based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Another business ran out of his own city is called Ps & Qs. And, back in 2018 he walked for Entreels in the heart of NYFW. His work does not end there as he is constantly forecasting anticipated photographers and creating with each of them. His Instagram is a portfolio of just how spread out he is amongst the industry.
Vogue and GQ models, Lewis’ highest inspirations in the modeling sphere, climbed to the top by surviving the bottom. “I would follow magazines like GQ and Vogue through social media and see these men on the covers thinking- I could do that too,” he remembers. When you truly think about it, women were typically the muses in front of the camera, so as more and more men entered the world of modeling, Lewis felt empowered to do the same- as he should.
Back when Instagram was solely focused on curated pictures and pictures only, that is when the cover star made his model debut. Currently, the app is in the middle of a debacle with a decision of whether or not to gear towards video or stick to their roots of owning the space for creative and trendy photography. Luckily Lewis squeezed in at the right time. As soon as he put himself out there to the world of Instagram, he began shooting with more and more photographers and brands.
Some people are morning people, some are evening people. Khayir may have just convinced everyone he knows and everyone who is about to know him after reading this issue just why nighttime is the prime time.
“The sun is setting, you get to reflect on the day, and maybe even have a glass of wine,” Lewis concludes. You cannot tell us that his ritual when the sun goes down is not glorious. Wine relaxes the mind and body, so you are in the ultimate state to meditate and release the stress of the day and inhale the beautiful, intimate moments you may have forgot that happened just a few hours ago.
